There are many galactagogues (substances that improve milk supply in breastfeeding women), both natural and prescription in nature. Eating oats can help to increase milk supply. Saponins — which oats are full of — are antibiotic and anti-inflammatory, supporting the immune system. But they also impact the milk-making hormones produced by the pituitary gland.
Flaxseed (also known as linseed) contains plant-based phytoestrogens, which are believed to act a little bit like human estrogen. Also a galactagogue, flaxseed meal is high in fibre.
Sometimes called nutritional yeast, brewer’s yeast contains phytoestrogens – which may be the root of its success as a galactagogue — as well as protein and iron.
Other galactagogues found in everyday foods include fenugreek, fennel, seame seeds, garlic, alfalfa, blessed thistle, nuts, dandelion, salmon, spinach and beet leaves, carrots, basil leaves, chickpeas, asparagus, cumin, brown rice, barley, poppy seeds, almonds, sweet potato, green papaya, pork knuckle, water.
